Mission Statement

WHAT IS SEXUAL

HARASSMENT?

cartoon-bubble-clipart-2.png

The Human Rights Act (NZ, 1993) defines sexual harassment as "any unwelcome or offensive sexual behaviour that is repeated, or is serious enough to have a harmful effect, or which contains an implied or overt promise of preferential treatment or an implied or overt threat of detrimental treatment"

Sexual harassment can involve spoken  or written material, images, digital material or a physical act. Sexual harassment can happen to anyone of any gender. Statistically, women are at the highest risk.

ABOUT US

New Zealand Comedy Working Group

Te Rōpū Pukuhohe o Aotearoa - Te Rāngai Mahi Tahi

As of November 2022, the NZ Comedy Working Group/Te Rōpū Pukuhohe o Aotearoa - Te Rāngai Mahi Tahi has ceased performing an active role as a formal group or as part of New Zealand Comedy. The initial goal of the group was to raise awareness and industry engagement, provide access to training, establish best practice guidelines/codes of conduct and put initial resources in place for the industry to access. The group actively participated in efforts to reduce harm across the industry.

Although there was some positive work towards the group's initial goals, experts advised there were a number of limitations as to what was achievable by the group under best practice, and there were organisations set up with staff professionally trained to offer support in this area. This ranged from funding, to legal requirements, advice, investigation and everything in between. As with many organisations, we did not receive any funding, and everyone involved donated their time.

We wish to thank everyone who was involved in the group, both as the core members of the group and the members of the NZ Comedy Safety Network.

Please remember there are still groups that can help effectively, Safe To Talk, Human Rights Commission, NZ Police, RespectED Aotearoa and the NZ Comedy Guild all have resources available.
